How to Put In and Remove Contact Lenses

Follow the technique taught by your eye care professional, because instructions can vary by lens type. Start by washing and drying your hands, then check that the lens is clean, undamaged, and not inside out. Work over a clean, uncluttered surface and handle one lens at a time. If you are new to lenses, give yourself enough time rather than rushing before an appointment or event. Practice makes the movements more familiar.

For insertion, place the lens on a clean fingertip and use the other hand to hold the eyelids open as instructed. Look where your practitioner recommended and gently place the lens on the eye. Blink slowly, then check that your vision feels clear and the lens is comfortable. If it feels scratchy or remains blurry, remove it and inspect it rather than tolerating discomfort. Never force a lens onto the eye if you are struggling.

To remove a lens, wash and dry your hands, look in the direction recommended during training, and gently move or pinch the lens using the method shown to you. Avoid fingernails and excessive pressure. Clean and store reusable lenses according to their instructions, or discard daily lenses. Ask your practitioner to watch your technique if handling remains difficult. Stop and seek advice if a lens seems stuck or you experience pain, redness, light sensitivity, or unusual vision changes.
